The Basic Principles of the Artist’s Way

Perhaps you’re a longtime student of the Artist’s Way, or perhaps you are taking your first step in the path to higher creativity. With any pursuit, fundamentals are key. So is steady, supportive guidance.

As you embark on your spiritual exploration for the first time, or once again, return always to the basic principles of the Artist’s Way. And emerge as the artist you want to be.

Basic Principles of the Artist’s Way:

1.    Creativity is the natural order of life. Life is energy: pure creative energy.

2.    There is an underlying, in-dwelling creative force infusing all of life–including ourselves.

3.    When we open ourselves to our creativity, we open ourselves to the creator’s creativity within us and our lives.

4.    We are, ourselves, creations. And we, in turn, are meant to continue creativity by being creative ourselves.

5.    Creativity is God’s gift to us. Using our creativity is our gift back to God.

6.    The refusal to be creative is self-will and is counter to our true nature.

7.    When we open ourselves to exploring our creativity, we open ourselves to God: good orderly direction.

8.    As we open our creative channel to the creator, many gentle though powerful changes are to be expected.

9.    It is safe to open ourselves up to greater and greater creativity.

10. Our creative dreams and yearnings come from a divine source. As we move toward our dreams, we move toward our divinity.

  1. Julia! So glad that I went on-line and found out you have a blog and have just started at week one! I have had The Artist’s Way Spriritual Guide to Creativity and The Artist’s Date Book for years but have kept them in a drawer only to take them out occassionally and mentally dance around them. My negative Censors are pretty strong. I bought the companion books (A Year of Creative Living and The Morning Pages Journal) the other day and decided to tackle this like a college course head on. I am tickled pink this coincided with your blog. So….armed with all my books and highlighters (and now your blog) I am ready………

  2. Julia,

I first came to know of your writing,in the 90s. An art therapist and artist friend recommended I read your book “The Artist Way”. I wanted to share with you and let you know that it changed my life. It colours every aspect of my creative process as an artist. It empowered and enabled me to fulfill dreams I never imagined possible. I share your book with younger women I meet, or with any one creative who may not be aware of it or your writing.
As a recovering person I related wholeheartedly to the basic principles and these were a confirmation, affirmation and clarification of what I’d believed for so long. I am so grateful you are in my life! I have thirty years of journals to draw on. After reading and putting into practice the principles I have been writing regularly in daily practice for twenty years now. My writing for me has been like prayer in so many respects.I just wanted to thank you.
